Desk-Based AssessmentsDesk-based assessments (DBAs) are usually commissioned as a component of a pre-planning application, and may form the cultural heritage section of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), with the purpose of identifying cultural heritage sites/landscapes so allowing the formulation of mitigation strategies. Dyfed Archaeological Trust is on hand to undertake DBAs and EIAs on your behalf, providing professional, impartial advice and guidance on the best ways to reduce archaeological risk, and give evidence at Public Inquiry should the need arise.
The national and regional Historic Environment Record, historic maps, printed documents and aerial photographs are all normally consulted as part of a desk-based assessment in order to identify archaeological and historic sites. A site visit appraises the condition and importance of the identified sites, and identifies any previously unrecorded visible features which may require further investigation.
Dyfed Archaeological Trust’s staff have considerable experience in with working with all relevant sources required for desk-top assessment, and produce reports of the highest academic standard. Of particular importance is our in-depth knowledge of local, regional and Welsh sources and of the type of sites likely to be encountered in the Welsh landscape, which are often unique when compared to other parts of Britain.
