About the Survey

The Tywi Afon yr oesoedd (Tywi - a river through time) project was a cooperation by Carmarthenshire County Council and Dyfed Archaeological Trust with funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, The European Union and The National Lottery. Help was also provided by the National Trust and a few other organisations (see the Links page). The graveyard survey was just one part and was undertaken by volunteers, supervised by Dyfed Archaeological Trust.

The graveyard survey started in 1982 by Llandeilo Women's institute and was a paper based exercise. It was continued in 2009/10 as part of Tywi Afon yr Oesoedd. This database takes information from both sources along with photographs of a few of the WI surveyed graves and all of the later survey. The photographs of individual graves and pdf copies of the recording sheets are all available for viewing.

Data was collected about the types of monuments, their condition and also the inscription and location within the graveyard. All graves in this 200/10 survey area were photographed, and it is possible that the original surveyed section will be photographed at some time in the future.
